The Mathematics major is designed for students interested in mathematics-oriented careers in industry, education, and government, and for those students interested in pursuing advanced studies in mathematics.

Requirements for Major in Mathematics


Admission to the Program

Admission is through a formal declaration of major and the successful completion of MAT 241 and MAT 242.

Requirements

Mathematics majors must meet their general education science requirements using laboratory science courses at the level of majors in that discipline (BI 141 , BIL 141 ; CH 141 , 141L; or PH 251 , PHL 251 ).

All mathematics majors/minors must earn a grade of “C” or better in all required courses taken in the College of Science, Engineering, and Mathematics.

Notes:


Math majors MUST choose a directed field of study as approved by the Mathematics Department (at least 12 credits) in a field complimenting their long-range professional goals.  

Math majors must complete the two-semester laboratory science sequence in BI 141  and BI 142 , or CH 141  and CH 142 , or PH 251  and PH 252 . If the PH sequence is chosen, students should move Junior year directed elective courses to the Sophomore year and Ethics to the Freshman year.

GE = General Education Courses.

*Based on your placement testing scores, these courses may require prerequisites which may extend the number of semesters needed to complete degree requirements. These prerequisites do not count towards the degree for graduation.

**Marching Band Members ONLY, MUST substitute PE Activity with MUB 110 - Marching Band. **ROTC Members ONLY, substitute PE Activity with MY 104 - Basic Military Science and MY 104 - Basic Military Science. (ROTC)
