Program Overview
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering offers degree programs leading to the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, the Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering, and the Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems. The department also offers a sequence of courses leading to a minor in Computer Science. For additional information on these programs and minors see the Department Chair.
Educational Outcomes
Computer Engineering
Program Educational Objectives:
The Program Educational Objectives (PEOs) of the Bethune-Cookman University Computer Engineering Program are to produce graduates who within a few years of graduation are able to combine skills gained through academic preparation and post-graduate experience to be able to:
- Demonstrate outstanding competence in the application of engineering knowledge and tools and exhibit innovative problem-solving skills.
-
Exhibit superior professional and ethical behavior, team-orientation, leadership, and excellent communication skills.
- Continue with professional and technical development through conferences and workshops, independent-study, graduate-studies and service to professional organizations.
Student Learning Outcomes
- An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
- An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.
- An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
- An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.
- An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.
- An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.
- An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
Computer Information Systems
Program Objectives
- Engage and provide leadership in analytical problem-solving in the computer information systems environment.
- Resolve information systems technology problems and meet the needs of end-users by applying troubleshooting methodologies.
- Apply and communicate information systems knowledge and practices effectively and professionally.
- Engage in lifelong learning experiences.
- Demonstrate strong ethical decision-making and a commitment to service to society and to the Information Systems profession by applying relevant policies and procedures to effectively secure and monitor computer systems using effective workforce skills, best practices, and ethical principles.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Analyze a complex computing problem and apply the principles of computing and other relevant disciplines to identify solutions.
- Design, implement and evaluate a computing-based solution to meet a given set of computing requirements in the context of the program’s discipline.
- Communicate effectively in a variety of professional contexts, including technical and non-technical audiences for business, end-user, client, and computing contexts.
- Recognize professional responsibilities and make informed judgments in computing practice based on legal and ethical principles.
- Function effectively as a member or leader of a team engaged in activities appropriate to the program’s discipline.
- Support the delivery, use, and management of information systems within an information systems environment.
Computer Science
Program Objectives
- The ability to enter professional careers and/or to pursue graduate studies in computer engineering and related fields.
- The ability to utilize their education in design processes, creative thinking, teamwork, communication skills, leadership skills, lifelong learning and ethical conduct to obtain solutions of computing problems in their profession.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Analyze a complex computing problem and to apply principles of computing and other relevant disciplines to identify solutions.
- Design, implement and evaluate a computing-based solution to meet a given set of computing requirements in the context of the program’s discipline.
- Communicate effectively in a variety of professional contexts.
- Recognize professional responsibilities and make informed judgments in computing practice based on legal and ethical principles.
- Function effectively as a member or leader of a team engaged in activities appropriate to the program’s discipline.
